A Science Experiment Related To The Topic Of Senses And The Skin – February 2026

The Grade 3 class recently carried out a science experiment related to the topic of senses and the skin. In the experiment their hands tricked their brain.
In this simple science experiment, we placed one hand in cold water and the other in warm (not hot) water for about 30 seconds, then moved both hands into a bowl of room temperature water at the same time. Surprisingly, the room temperature water felt warm to the hand that had been in cold water and cold to the hand that had been in warm water. This happens because our temperature receptors adjust to what they feel first, so the brain compares the change in temperature rather than measuring the exact temperature itself.
This activity was led by Ms Veronique Sultana, with the help of Ms Shana Calleja and Ms Katia Camilleri.
