Exploring Innovation in Education: Our Job Shadowing Experience in Estonia
From 8th to 11th September 2025, a group of educators, Ms Mary Grace Grech, Music and library teacher, as well as Ms Bridget Cumbo and Ms Shana Calleja, LSEs, Ms Ruth Mansueto, Deputy Head from Mater Boni Consilii St Joseph School, Paola, embarked on an engaging job shadowing experience across three schools in Estonia, immersing themselves in one of Europe’s most forward-thinking education systems.
This experience was more than just a visit—it was a deep dive into Estonia’s digital-first approach to education, where technology and pedagogy blend seamlessly to empower both students and teachers.
The schools that hosted the group of educators were Talinna Rahumae Middle School, Tallinna Teeninduskool (vocational school) as well as Tallinn School of Economics.
One of the core goals of this initiative was to analyse, reflect, and learn from the Estonian schools, identifying best practices that can be adapted and implemented within our own educational context. We observed how Estonian schools foster innovation, independence, and digital literacy from an early age.
Estonia’s education system stands out for its extensive use of smart solutions, including:
• Digital databases for student records and academic tracking
• E-learning materials and digital textbooks that support personalized learning
• Digital class diaries and assessment tools that streamline communication and feedback
• E-exams and various applications and programs that enhance engagement and efficiency
These tools not only simplify administrative tasks but also create a more interactive, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment.
Inspired by what we’ve seen, we are now reflecting on how to adapt these digital practices to suit our own organization’s needs. The goal is to foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, ensuring our students are equipped with the skills they need for the future.
This job shadowing experience has reaffirmed our belief that collaboration and openness to new ideas are key to educational growth.
