Conference on Mental Health and Well-being of Children – November 2022

On Friday 25th November 2022, our educators attended a conference on mental health and well-being of students which was organised under the auspices of our headmaster and the Ambassador of Malta to Estonia and Finland, His Excellency Dr Kenneth Vella. After the opening speech by Dr Vella, President Emeritus of Malta, Her Excellency Dr Marie Louise Coleiro Preca addressed the audience. She insisted on the need of more awareness on the importance of mental health and well-being in Malta as well as the need for more services to be available to children. Dr Coleiro Preca shared recommendations on how institutions may focus on students’ mental health with the aim of helping children live sustainably. These recommendations were published in a children’s manifest last year.
Following this intervention, Dr Kadri Haljas, founder and CEO of Triumf Health, delivered a presentation on how Estonia is promoting and supporting the mental health and well-being of children. She explained in detail the work being carried out by Estonian institutions to address the mental health of children.
Salient points emerged from the workshops that were held during the conference in relation to the use of technology to help children take an active role in their own wellbeing by gaining skills to empower them. The workshops were followed by Dr Haljas’ presentation of an Estonian application aimed at children between the ages of 7 and 12. This application is in the form of a game called Triumfland whose aim is to guide children to build resilience and take a leading role in their personal wellbeing. This application will be available to Maltese educators to use it with their students.
The conference was well attended by educators from different institutions, professionals as well as students working in the field of mental health. Special thanks to Dr Vella for providing the attendees with such a great learning experience.
